A First for Us: Bonsai Terrarium Workshop

A First for Us: Bonsai Terrarium Workshop

For this session, our participants surprised us (in the best way possible) by choosing to create Bonsai terrariums. Now, while we’ve guided countless terrarium builds before, this was a first for our team in a group setting, mainly because Bonsai terrariums are no small feat. They’re larger, more intricate and require a little extra care and planning.

Before we even got our hands dirty, each participant had the chance to select their own preferred Bonsai plant for them to put in their terrarium. This moment always feels a bit like matchmaking as each person instinctively drawn to a tree that somehow reflects their own style.

Some leaned towards fuller, more lush foliage, while others picked more delicate, structured forms. And just like that, every terrarium already had its own personality before the building even began.

Working with Bonsai meant adjusting our usual flow. The size, the root structure, the balance of the composition, it all required a bit more intention. But what stood out most wasn’t the challenge.

It was how naturally everyone eased into it.

Hands moving with focus. Conversations flowing. Little moments of “wait, does this look okay?” followed by proud smiles when it absolutely did.

While most of the group went all-in on Bonsai terrariums, two of them took a slightly different route and created bowl terrariums instead.

And honestly? They turned out ridiculously cute.
